China’s First International Dark Sky Community
Certified in 2023, Xichong in Shenzhen is the first International Dark Sky Community in China.1 2 Supported by local government policies, Xichong demonstrates how human development can be balanced with natural environment protection. The community is home to the Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory, a public destination for astronomy education. Through outdoor-lighting surveys, policy development, and phased lighting retrofits, Xichong has reduced unnecessary artificial light and strengthened protection of its nighttime environment.

Community of Xichong recognized as first International Dark Sky Community in China
XICHONG, Shenzhen, China — Xichong, Shenzhen, is now an International Dark Sky Community certified by DarkSky International. Becoming the first International Dark Sky Community in China.
The nation's first international dark community has been established here in Shenzhen.
Xichong Community is located in the southeastern part of Shenzhen, covering an area of approximately 10.9 square kilometers. It includes Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory, Xichong Beach, and eight natural villages such as Hesou, Yashan, and Xinwu.
Xichong launches Shenzhen's first Dark Night Protection Campaign to create a dark community.
The exploration of the stars has been a constant throughout human history, and immersing oneself in the darkness allows people to fully experience the breath of nature. The "Lunar Occultation of Mars" observation and the launch ceremony of the first Shenzhen Dark Sky Guardians Alliance, hosted by the Shenzhen Science Popularization Education Base Federation, opened at No. 2 Beach of Xichong Beach.
Fireflies in the Dark Night of Dapeng and Xichong Now Available
The spectacular firefly display that usually takes place in May has quietly illuminated the nights of the Nan'ao Xichong International Dark Night Community in Dapeng New District, Shenzhen, this April.
